"島唄 / Shima Uta (Island Song)" - Cover - Uploaded on YouTube

It's been a long time, actually way too long, since I posted something on my blog last. Since February 2012, I haven't posted anything... Unbelievable....!!!

Anyway, I've posted a new video on my YouTube channel (ChiharuMusica).
This time, it is not my original song, but a cover of the Japanese song "Shima Uta" (Island Song), which is originally performed by the Japanese band called "The Boom". (composed by the vocalist Kazufumi Miyazawa). It was recorded when I sang it at an old people's home in Osaka the other day, and is a different version from the one by The Boom, it is a version of Tokiko Kato.

This song has been sung and loved by many people all around the world so far since it was released in 1992. An Argentine musician Alfredo Casero covered the song and sang in Japanese, and it made waves across the country, on top of that it was chosen as the anthem for the national football team for 2002 FIFA World Cup.

When I heard this song for the first time, I instantly liked the melody but didn't really pay attention to the details of the lyrics. Some years later, when I happened to watch some documentary on the history of Okinawa with my father, he talked to me that it was not just a good music / popular song but had a profound meaning. Kazufumi Miyazawa, who wrote the music and sings it (the vocalist of the band "The Boom"), referenced the tragedy that struck Okinawa in WW2 (the landing attack by the US forces) and appealed for peace in the song. It is interesting to analise or learn the song, as you find many metaphoric meanings in it, plus some of them embrace elements of Okinawan culture. I would like you to know that this is not only a good song to listen to but also a song that appeals for peace around the world, our beautiful planet "the Earth".

Here below you will find the original track by "The Boom". I hope you will enjoy their music.

Love and Peace to all of you,
Chiharu
